What Are We Optimizing For?

WEDNESDAY SPOTLIGHT

AI & TECHNOLOGY

I recently came across a paper called “AI Agents for Inventory Control: Human-LLM-OR Complementarity,” and its core insight stuck with me.

The story was not that AI outperformed humans. It was that humans, AI and optimization models often achieved the best results together.

That distinction matters. Most discussions about AI focus on capability and automation. The harder question is what these systems are optimizing for.

In the real world, decisions rarely have a single objective. Cost competes with resilience. Speed competes with risk. Growth competes with capacity.

Taking action is rarely the hard part. Defining success is. If the objective is unclear, faster decisions will not necessarily be better ones.
