The Buyer’s Leverage Is the Rules

SOURCING EXCELLENCE

SOURCING

A buyer’s most consistent source of negotiation leverage may be its commitment to the rules.

If the final round is never final, deadlines always move or award logic changes after bids arrive, suppliers learn that the rules are suggestions.

Leverage comes when the other side believes you.

Repeated interactions make this more important. Suppliers remember whether the buyer followed through, whether concessions became precedents and what happened when pressure increased.

AI does not remove that dynamic. Supplier agents can learn too. An autonomous buyer that repeatedly threatens to walk away and never does will eventually be discounted.

Credibility is not a legacy human concern that disappears with automation. It becomes part of the history between organizations and agents.
