Defaults Narrow Outcomes

SOURCING EXCELLENCE

SOURCING

Defaults are convenient because they reduce the number of choices that have to be discussed. But every default also removes alternatives.

Standard supplier splits, incumbent protections, fixed specifications, familiar contract terms or assumed service levels can all become invisible constraints before suppliers ever compete.

One size fits none when the default becomes a substitute for a decision.

The useful sourcing question is not whether defaults are bad. It is whether they still reflect what the business needs. If an assumption is important enough to shape the award, it should be visible enough to challenge.

A sourcing event should reveal alternatives, not quietly eliminate them before the market has a chance to respond.
